Duval sent this to me, so I thought I’d post it.
During the week I hurt my knee and wasn’t sure how I would perform on the ride but once I started to warm up it was like nothing was wrong thankfully.
The weather was great on Saturday and no rain to be found. It was a chilly start at 42 degrees but warmed up quick when starting to climb. Both Bernard and I started at 7:30am and finished a little after 2pm.
The first 20 miles of the course was up hill which was good while we were fresh. Then we had a 20 mile descent. Both BZ and I love straight downhills so we had a good pace. Midway through, BZ stopped for a moment and I jumped on a fast group and that lead kept me up front until the next rest stop.
This group was really fast and I got on the train. we were avg 33mph down hill and high 20s on straights. That was tough and a rush.
The area was wide open and beautiful and we took the pic right after the 2nd stop.
Then we started on a nice straight and rollers and at 70 miles we hit the start of the 5 mile hill called Heartbreak Hill! The last 2 miles gets pretty steep. I got a second wind and BZ started to struggle up the hill with cramps. He usually passes me but it started to warm up and he does better when it is not hot.
Once we got to the top we hit our 3rd and final rest stop and final big hill. The next 15 miles through Lockwood valley were rollers and the last 7 miles were all downhill. Great way to finish the 3 KOM series.
Both BZ and I finished 10th and 11th out of 27 in our age range (50s) for all 3 rides.
MC – We both were close.
BA – BZ dominated that ride
HH – I dominated that ride
We will get our polka dot jerseys in 2 months. It was a great accomplishment and I am glad it is over. 🙂
PS – We found out later that Hal did the HH ride as well. We didn’t see him and must have started at different times. He did a great job as well.
There were a couple of great pictures, but I couldn’t detach them from Duval’s email. Sorry about that.
