On last weeks ride, Jim suffered through one of his “off” days in the saddle, and as we neared home he decided to tuck in to the Stonehaus for some rest. While recovering (which involved taking a nap, I’m told) at the Haus, he discovered that a new cycling club was being formed and the inaugural ride was slated for today. http://www.stonehauscyclingclub.org Jim told me about it and it seemed worth checking out. Combining coffee, wine and bikes (not necessarily in that order) seems like a swell idea.
About 150’ riders showed up this morning at 8:00. There were booths from the local shops as well as free coffee and smoothies and energy bars to sample from http://www.myojio.com/shop/ojio-sports.html/ It was a pretty good way to start a ride. After some speechifying and photos we started off for the ride which was broken up into a long and short. The long went out Potrero and around the Horn and up Mulholland, which was exactly what we did last week but, oh well, at least it wasn’t windy. The short ride did a Hidden Valley out and back.
Naturally Jim and I elected to take the long road and we fell in with some fast looking guys, mostly from the Amgen Club. It was a quick rip through Hidden Valley with minimal stopping and regrouping. Same through the Potrero Valley and across the Oxnard Plain. All of the guys (only guys in the long ride fast group but there were lots of ladies at the opening festivities) were experienced riders and the proper pace line etiquette was observed for the most part. The sweep through PCH was unmarred by the gusty winds that nearly blew us over last week, so we blasted over to Leo Carillo in record time. After a short regroup and nature break at Leo Carillo, we saddled up for the grind up Mulholland. The coastal coolness lasted about a mile and then it got hot. This broke the group into pieces but Jim managed a full recovery from last week and had on “On” day that saw him crest the summit ahead of everyone. Jim is back!
We did regroup at the top and stayed together through the bitches and then a last regroup at the Westlake Potrero junction. Finally, we soft pedaled our way back to Stonehaus where the fun continued. They had a Wine Social this afternoon 2-5, which appeared to be over by the time Catherine and I showed up at 4:30 so I can’t comment on how that was but the plan is to make that a monthly thing.
All in all, the Stonehaus Cycling Club is on and maybe the VC gang would enjoy the occasional ride with them.
Thanks for the great recap, BZ!🚴🏻💨👍🏻
